Nirvana

With four chords and an unmistakable drum intro, Nirvana’s ‘Smells Like Teen Spirit’ altered the course of rock 'n' roll. They became the world’s gateway, not only to innumerable bands who’d before only existed in music’s underground, but to a completely different way of thinking about music and musicians. Before frontman Kurt Cobain took his own life, Nirvana recorded three stunning studio albums. Cobain, along with Krist Novoselic and a young Dave Grohl, combined catchy hooks, abstract-yet-memorable lyrics and high energy into a sound that the mainstream desperately needed. They were the perfect answer to the hair metal scene that had already peaked and was on its way out. Nirvana gave a voice to scores of kids that just couldn’t relate to the world of Motley Crue and Guns N' Roses. Nirvana proved to be a cathartic relief to the anxiety felt by millions of teenagers across the country.
