Coming straight outta St. Louis, the city that gave us Chuck Berry, the Brainstems make gloriously non-cerebral rock 'n' roll. The foursome's motto is "hands off the controls," and their sound is rooted in the cruddy pre-punk of the '60s.

Last November saw the release of 'Styrofoam,' a seven-song cassette featuring a cover of 'E.S.Q.' by '80s-era Detroit trash-rock greats the Gories. It's the type of tune that cements a young garage-rock group's underground cred, though one listen to 'King of the Swamp,' today's free MP3, leaves little doubt the 'Stems' are the real deal.

"This song is about being the literal King of the Swamp,' guitarist Andrew Warshauer tells Diffuser.fm. We're not sure what power said monarch wields, but we're gonna go ahead and bow our heads in reverence.
