Throwback Thursday: Smashing Pumpkins In Their Prime On MTV In ’93

Opinions vary when it comes to the Smashing Pumpkins‘ later works, but few rock fans can argue with the awesomeness of ‘Siamese Dream.’ Back in 1993, when the M in MTV meant “music” instead of “massive amounts of cheap reality shows”, the Pumpkins set up their gear in the MTV studio and played a handful of songs.

They broke out their big hits, of course, like ‘Today’ and ‘Disarm.’ But they also played ‘Rocket’ and ‘Cherub Rock,’ both of which were under-appreciated singles during their time. Check out the performance in the video above.

After ‘Siamese Dream,’ the Pumpkins began walking a path that would sharply divide their fans, many of which ended up jumping ship. While the next album, ‘Mellon Collie and the Infinite Sadness,’ was a big success for the band, ‘Adore’ left many fans feeling alienated, and that feeling would only increase as Billy Corgan experimented with more diverse sounds and the lineup changed, leaving him as the only founding member.

William Corgan never really abandoned heavy guitar rock, though. And he has continued to release music under the Smashing Pumpkins name throughout the years. The Pumpkins most recently released the song ‘One and All,’ which, while still not ‘Siamese Dream’-level riff-tastic, is a solid rock tune.
