Tom Waits will help Homer Simpson prepare for the end of the Earth on a future episode of 'The Simpsons.' The singer has been lined up as a guest voice for a forthcoming Season 24 episode that's scheduled to air some time in December.

“We did a lot of research into the ‘prepper’ phenomenon, where people are convinced that some horrible catastrophe -- like an electromagnetic pulse -- is going to occur, and that people will have to survive without the grid," 'Simpsons' producer Al Jean tells Yahoo! TV Line site. "Homer becomes a prepper.”

Waits won't be singing during the episode, just talking in his legendarily gruff growl of a voice. But he does join a long tradition of previous musicians making guest appearances on 'The Simpsons,' including the Smashing Pumpkins, the White Stripes, Sonic Youth, the Ramones, R.E.M. and many, many others.

Additional guests lined up for Season 24 include Zooey Deschanel of She and Him, Fred Armisen and Carrie Brownstein of 'Portlandia,' Patton Oswalt and renowned Phish-lover Justin Bieber. Somehow we doubt he's going to come on the show to sing a cover of Phish's 'Bouncing Around the Room,' but we can dream, right?

Waits released the album 'Bad As Me' last year and recently made a rare live appearance on 'The Late Show With David Letterman.' He also recently released a stunning new video for the track 'Hell Broke Luce,' which you can watch here.
