Tool kicked off a brief U.S. tour on Saturday (October 22) with a set at the Aftershock Fest in Sacramento, Calif. But it wasn't without its difficulties, as drummer Danny Carey was diagnosed with a staph infection shortly before the show began.

Consequence of Sound found the story, saying that guitarist Adam Jones posted the following to his Instagram account. “I truly have to respect Mr. Danny Carey who played the entire show with a very serious staph infection. At first on Friday morning, he was misdiagnosed with a poisonous spider bite on his upper leg. Then later Friday night the quarter-sized wound was cut opened & drained. By Saturday [Carey] was still aching from head to toe & from what I heard the local doctor recommended we skip the show. But Dan with headaches & painful joints played anyway. #Tool #Hero #BestDrummerInTheWorld #stubborn #getWellSoon #theshowmustgoon"

Tool are only on the road for a week, playing Salt Lake City tonight, followed by Denver on Wednesday and Little Rock, Ark., on Friday. They're wrapping it up with a headlining slot on Saturday at the Voodoo Experience in New Orleans. They'll be part of a diverse lineup that also includes Arcade Fire, Preservation Hall Jazz Band, the Weeknd, Band of Horses and Puscifer, a side project of Tool frontman Maynard James Keenan.

However, there is still no word on when fans can expect a new album from Tool. There has been nothing new from them since they released 10,000 Days -- their fourth record -- in 2006, and as recently as this spring, Keenan said that the process has stalled. “We’ve found a common ground,” he said. “We just can’t seem to move forward.”
