It’s no shock that Gotye sits atop our Top 40 Songs chart for May 2012 — from his ‘Somebody That I Used to Know’ video and its nearly 200 million YouTube views to his much-hyped ‘Saturday Night Live’ performance a couple weeks back, Gotye is not only the surprise breakthrough artist of the year, but also well on his to becoming a bona fide superstar.

Other Top 40 Songs highlights include the Black Keys‘ ‘Gold on the Ceiling,’ not too far off pace at No. 2, Jack White‘s debut solo single ’Love Interruption,’ M83‘s gorgeously blissed-out electro-pop nugget ‘Midnight City’ and the Shins‘ ‘Simple Song,’ a simply marvelous track off their latest album, ‘Port of Morrow.’

Some of the newer tunes on the tally include Silversun Pickups‘ ‘Bloody Mary (Nerve Endings),’ the Dandy Warhols‘ ‘Sad Vacation’ and Fiona Apple‘s ‘Every Single Night’ — they are all the first single off their respective artist’s latest album.

These are just a few of the tunes that have been heating up Diffuser.fm recently. Check out our full Top 40 list below.
