5 Questions For … The Trews’ John-Angus MacDonald

John Agnus-McDonald The Trews
David Bastedo

With 17 years and five albums now under their belt, Toronto indie rockers the Trews can pretty much be called music veterans these days. They recently released a self-titled album, which has become their highest-charting LP in their homeland. “A hit record … leads to a lot of sold-out shows, and we love to play for our fans,” says guitarist John-Angus MacDonald. The band is heading back on the road this week (you can see tour dates here), but MacDonald took some time to answer a few of our questions first.

What is the biggest misconception people have about Canadians?
That we all know each other and live in igloos. Also that we’re all nice. I know some pretty big a——s up here.

Should cassettes or eight-tracks make a comeback?
Cassettes, because they’re so damn portable. And I miss mixtapes.

Guns N’ Roses or Rolling Stones?
Depends on the day. It’s a tough call — we’ve opened for both and love both bands. It would be amazing to see the original lineup of Guns N’ Roses, but the Stones are part of music history.

Which song do you wish you wrote?
‘Fly’ by Nick Drake. It’s perfect.

What Canadian stereotype do you most identify with?
Being a bearded beer drinker.
