Vampire Weekend’s New Album Is ’80 Percent’ Written

Vampire Weekend fans have been waiting patiently for a new full-length album since the release of ‘Contra’ in 2010. According to frontman Ezra Koenig, they may not have to wait much longer.

In a Spin feature published last week, Koenig and Hamilton Leithauser of the Walkmen interviewed each other, sharing anecdotes from the road and a mutual musical appreciation. (In fact, according to Koenig, “I’m pretty sure that the Walkmen are the band that I’ve paid to see the most in my life.”) But it wasn’t just inside baseball talk — the article also included some news regarding what’s in store for Vampire Weekend.

Admitting that the band’s third album has “been a long process,” Koenig told Leithauser that “we always try to write and record at the same time. So we’ve always got some ProTools session demo that tends to actually turn into the finished product.”

That’s helped build material for the next record, apparently — Koenig estimated that “I think we have 80 percent of the songs now.”

This jibes with comments Vampire bassist Chris Baio made to Rolling Stone earlier this year, when he said, “We do have a ton of stuff” and daydreamed about possibly having the new record out in 2012, but admitted, “I always want to release music as soon as possible, but more and more I’m realizing it’s something you almost have no control over.”
