Vampire Weekend have emerged from their cave and announced plans to release a follow-up to their 2010 album ‘Contra’ sometime soon — possibly as early as this spring, Consequence of Sound reports. The band recorded the as-yet-untitled disc in New York City and Los Angeles with producer Ariel Rechtshaid (Murs, We Are Scientists, Usher) and assistance from the group’s own Rostam Batmanglij.

“It really does feel like the third chapter in a book,” frontman Ezra Koenig told Q magazine of the disc, the band’s third. “We created some characters on the first record, some of which are real people, some of which are ourselves, so it’s not so hard to keep following them and see what their concerns are now and how their lives have changed.” He also described the disc’s tone as  “dark” and “organic.”

In July, Vampire Weekend debuted a new, then-untitled song in Cleveland (watch a clip of the performance here) and then took it to the stage of ‘Jimmy Kimmel Live’ for its “official” premiere on Halloween. (Watch that one here.) By then, we knew the tune was called ‘Unbelievers’ and was most likely bound for album number three — but we’re not exactly prepared to call it “dark” in tone.
