Watch the Surviving Members of Audioslave Perform With an Empty Mic in Honor of Chris Cornell

The surviving members of Audioslave took a moment to pay tribute to their late lead singer Chris Cornell from the stage in Berlin on June 7.

Bassist and backing vocalist Tim Commerford, guitarist Tom Morello, and drummer Brad Wilk — currently touring as three-fifths of the rap-rock supergroup Prophets of Rage with Public Enemy‘s Chuck D and Cypress Hill‘s B-Real — have now taken time out to honor Cornell more than once since the singer’s suicide several weeks ago. As previously reported, the band was recently joined by System of a Down vocalist Serj Tankian for a live rendition of the Audioslave track “Like a Stone”; Tankian, like Cornell, contributed music to the movie The Promise earlier this year.

The trio also performed “Like a Stone” as an instrumental in the studio — which is the same approach they took in Berlin, with the added poignant touch of shining a spotlight over an unoccupied mic onstage while they played. That rendition, which you can watch via the fan-shot Instagram footage embedded below, found the crowd handling the song’s lyrics in Cornell’s stead.

Although Audioslave suffered a somewhat contentious split in 2007, friendships between the former band members were rekindled in recent years; Cornell expressed a willingness to explore further activity after a reunion show in January of 2017, and there had earlier been talk of potentially putting out unreleased material. The group’s final album, Revelations, was released in 2006.
