He was born in Detroit and made his name as part of the scene there. Actually, he changed his name and started a group with his wife, although they claimed their relationship was something else. The band was one of indie rock's biggest in the '00s. They broke up in 2011.

But he's been busy. Even when his band was still around, he worked on various side projects, produced some legendary artists and even found time to appear in a movie or two. He's as much celebrated for his guitar playing as he is for his songwriting. Last year, he launched his solo career with an album that debuted at No. 1.
