Zola Jesus Gives It Her All at Brooklyn Show
From her somber entrance holding a black votive of incense to her energetic -- and sometimes spastic -- movements on stage, Zola's performance at Saint Vitus Bar on Sunday evening was more like a spiritual experience than your typical concert. With fog filling the stage, there was an eerie, gothic vibe to the show. But even with all the headbanging that Zola, born Nika Roza Danilova, does onstage, her vocals will blow you away -- no matter what genre you're into.
Despite the instrumentals being too loud at times, Nika's vocals push through blending a soulful and sometimes R&B undertone with a raspy edge. She shows this talent off best during 'Nail' where she starts off the song a cappella (which you can view below) and jumps off into another powerful performance. And despite being hunched over with her hair covering her face, she's not afraid to take chances; she performed various songs offstage, rolled around the floor and literally bounced herself off the wall at one point.
Whether it was quiet moments or the bombastic ones, the audience was entranced by her presence -- Bjork even showed up to show her support for the 25-year-old songstress. Before Nika went on, Deradoorian warmed up the crowd with her layered and precise sounds and angelic voice.
Zola Jesus will be performing another show at Saint Vitus Bar in Brooklyn tonight (Jan. 26) before continuing on with her tour in Philadelphia tomorrow (Jan. 27).
