Chris Walla Plays Final Show With Death Cab for Cutie
As reported on Aug. 13, Death Cab for Cutie announced the departure of founding member and multi-instrumentalist, Chris Walla. In the artist's statement, he noted that his final show with the band he helped create in 1997 would be at the seventh annual Rifflandia music festival in Victoria, British Columbia on Sept. 13.
If you glance at the calendar, that was Saturday night.
Performing a 16-song set -- including tracks like ‘Title and Registration’ and ‘Soul Meets Body’ (the full setlist is below) -- Death Cab ended the night with a powerful rendition of 'Marching Bands of Manhattan' off of 2005's 'Plans.'
"This is our last song, and this is our last song with Chris Walla. Please give him a large round of applause," frontman Ben Gibbard said to the crowd. "Thank you so much for the last 17 years, Chris."
At the end of the night, Walla looked, obviously, overwhelmed with emotion; he hugged Gibbard and then the entire band embraced in a group hug.
As Walla mentioned in his statement last month:
I love my bandmates, and I’m proud of what we’ve done, and mercifully, those things don’t change with my departure. Moving forward, my plans are simply to continue making music, producing records, and erring on the side of benevolence and beauty whenever possible.
