Yesterday (Jan. 24), music and cinema fans alike celebrated the premiere of ‘Kurt Cobain: Montage of Heck’ – the first officially authorized documentary of the late Nirvana frontman – at the Sundance Film Festival in Park City, Utah.

The Brett Morgen-directed film’s debut even brought together Cobain’s wife, Courtney Love, and their daughter, Frances Bean, who have recently made amends after a period of estrangement. The premiere was the first time Love and her daughter have appeared together in public in five years, and the warm reunion was documented with photos of Love and Frances Bean hugging on the red carpet.

Frances Bean is listed as executive producer on the forthcoming documentary, with Morgen even calling her “the glue” that holds the film together.

“The movie’s for her,” Morgen said of Cobain’s daughter (via Billboard). “Frances and I share the exact same vision of what this should be. People associated with Nirvana, Dave [Grohl] and Krist [Novoselic], wanted to do this for Frances.”

Love, on the other hand, did not hold any official role on the movie, as Morgen said there would be a conflict of interest since Cobain’s former wife is one of the film’s subjects.

Cobain’s former Nirvana bandmate Krist Novoselic was also photographed at the premiere with Morgen. Apparently, Cobain’s other bandmate, Dave Grohl, was interviewed for the film but not in time for it to make the final cut. However, there’s still a chance that the footage may appear in later editions of the movie by the time it makes its premiere on HBO on May 4.

"We had a locked print and trying to re-edit a film with a new interview in 10 days is kind of difficult," Morgen explained. "This is the picture I wanted -- I didn't want there to be a lot of people in the film. I hope we'll see a version [with the Grohl interview] some time."
