Watch Koko the Gorilla Play Flea’s Bass
In addition to having the nickname of an insect and having beekeeping as a hobby, Flea also enjoys much larger members of the animal kingdom. He recently stopped by the Gorilla Foundation and let Koko, the gorilla famed for her ability to communicate via sign language, play his bass for a bit.
Flea uploaded the video above to the Red Hot Chili Peppers' YouTube channel, along with the caption, "My sweet and true friend Koko rocks a flea bass like it ain't nuthin."
"One of Koko's favorite musicians, Flea from the Red Hot Chili Peppers came to visit," the foundation wrote on its website. "Koko was thrilled by the mellow sounds and a jamming session followed with Koko strumming on Flea's bass! Watch for more news on future collaborations between the two."
In the clip above, Koko is holding the bass and plucking at its strings, even as her right hand is muting them against the fretboard (apparently, she's a lefty). A couple of times, she lets go long enough to produce a sound. At one point, she fiddles with the instrument's knobs, as Flea lies back and enjoys the whole thing.
"This is the greatest thing that's ever happened," Flea said, while calling Koko a "very curious gorilla." "This is the day that I will never forget in my life."
According to the mission statement on its website, the Gorilla Foundation aims to "learn about gorillas by communicating with them, and apply our knowledge to advance great ape conservation, education, care and empathy — conservation through communication."
