Know how we said Lou Reed invented punk? You might also credit the forever-shirtless force of nature pictured here. Born James Osterberg Jr., this Midwestern misfit picked himself an apt stage name -- think "Pop" as dynamite, not Top 40 music -- and found the perfect band. As leader of the original Stooges, Iggy made three albums of loud, abrasive, audacious rock 'n' roll, inspiring weirdo kids around the world to form their own bands.

Pop, like Reed, has had his fallow periods, and in 2007, he tarnished the Stooges' otherwise spotless discography with the bland 'The Weirdness.' The world might not need new Stooges music, but it does need more Iggy, and as long as he's wriggling around onstage, we're all better for it.
