Joan Jett & the Blackhearts Unleash New Album ‘Unvarnished’ On NYC [Exclusive Photos]
Last night (Oct. 2), rock icon Joan Jett celebrated the release of 'Unvarnished,' her tenth studio album with longtime band the Blackhearts, by treating New York City fans to an intimate performance at Santos Party House.
Clad in a red skintight metallic bodysuit and Converse sneakers, Jett took the stage with her very adorable baby niece. She and the gang then kicked off the set with their new single ‘TMI’ before reaching back for hits by Jett's onetime band the Runaways, among them ‘Cherry Bomb’ and ‘You Drive Me Wild.’
At 55, Jett maintains an edgy and energetic onstage demeanor that keeps her looking hot and sounding flawless. She knows how to capture a crowd in the palm of her hands, and fans sang along to such classics as ‘Bad Reputation’ and her renditions of the Arrows ‘I Love Rock ’n’ Roll’ and Gary Glitter’s ‘Do You Wanna Touch Me (Oh Yeah).’
The night was ultimately about ‘Unvarnished,’ though, and fans gladly rocked out to fresh tracks ‘Any Weather,’ ‘Fragile’ ‘Hard to Grow Up’ and ‘Reality Mentality.’ Before singing the aptly titled 'Make It Back,' a song about the struggles she and her neighbors in Long Beach and Far Rockaway faced in the aftermath of Hurricane Sandy, Jett praised the spirit of those in her community.
The band ended its set with the Sweet’s 'AC/DC' and ‘Everyday People’ by Sly & the Family Stone. Outspoken and dynamic, Jett and her wonderfully unvarnished voice will continue influencing young rockers for years to come.
