English ska and reggae musician Judge Dread was best known as the first white recording artist to have a reggae hit in Jamaica, and when he first traveled there, many of his fans were surprised by his skin color. He was also famous for his lewd and lascivious songs, many of which were banned in the United Kingdom.

The Judge died doing what he loved: performing. He collapsed onstage at the end of a show in Canterbury, England, on March 13, 1998, at the age of 55. "Let's hear it for the band,” he said before kneeling down. He was suffering a heart attack, but the crowd initially thought it was a joke. An off-duty doctor realized what was going on and tried to resuscitate him, but to no avail. According to one account, the ambulance that subsequently arrived wouldn't start, and when the Judge's fans began pushing it to the hospital, police accused them of trying to steal it.
