Leonard Cohen to Release New Album After 80th Birthday
Forget cake and 'Wheel of Fortune': Legendary singer-songwriter Leonard Cohen will celebrate his 80th birthday next month with a brand new album.
Rolling Stone reports that word spread during a fan club convention in Dublin last week that Cohen will release the full-length, 'Popular Problems,' in late September -- right after he turns the big 8-0 on Sept. 21.
Jarkko Arjatsalo, a Finnish accountant who runs Cohen's official website, wrote a forward for the event booklet that said: "Leonard has worked hard on his next studio album of entirely new songs. He asked me to let you know that 'Popular Problems' will be out at the end of September, shortly after his 80th birthday."
The album -- Cohen's 13th -- will follow his 2012 effort, 'Old Ideas,' and he said in an interview that he already had plenty of the songs for 'Popular Problems' written. "I rehearsed some other songs on the road – new songs that didn't make it onto ['Old Ideas']," he said. "So I have a new record [after this one], at least two-thirds of it, anyway."
What can we expect? Probably stuff that sounds at least a little like this song from 'Old Ideas':
