Tom Gabel Comes Out as Transgender – Shocking Rock Stories of 2012

Not only did Tom Gabel of the Florida-based punk band Against Me! come out as transgender and announce plans to begin living as a woman in 2012 -- the singer revealed the shocking news in Rolling Stone magazine. Gabel, now known as Laura Jane Grace, has since begun the transformation process by taking hormones and undergoing electrolysis treatments and is considering gender-reassigment surgery.

As for her decision to come out in a national publication, Grace later explained that “when you have something like Rolling Stone that you can hand to someone and be like, ‘If you have a question after you read this, feel free to ask me,’ was a great thing to have."
