Ugly Band Breakups: The Smiths
A 1987 article in NME that declared "Smiths to Split" was the beginning of the end for the iconic British band. Guitarist Johnny Marr, thinking the story was planted by singer Morrissey, left the group for good that summer -- and by the time the band's final album, 'Strangeways, Here We Come,' dropped later that year, the rest of the group had followed him out the door. Twenty-five years and one rumored $75 million reunion offer later, and a Smiths comeback still looks very unlikely.
