It got its start under painful circumstances, but the Amy Winehouse Foundation marked its first year of existence today (Sept. 14) by announcing that it has raised nearly $375,000 (£230,000) in the late singer's name -- and that it intends to raise far more by the end of the year.

The foundation, established by Winehouse's father, Mitch, to help "young people, especially those who are in need by reason of ill health, disability, financial disadvantage or addiction," shares its birthday with the U.K. songstress, who would have turned 29 today. According to the NME, its funds are derived through a combination of donations and proceeds from Winehouse recordings such as the recently released 'Lioness: Hidden Treasures.'

The Foundation coffers -- which organizers pledge to expand to more than $800,000 before the year is out -- have already benefited a number of needy recipients; as the NME reports, a lengthy list of substantial donations have gone out to various youth centers, schools and medical foundations.

Winehouse's fans can also expect a gala celebration in her honor next year to mark what would have been her 30th birthday.
