Turns out that the late Nirvana leader didn’t pen those nasty words about his wife, Courtney Love, after all. Apparently she wrote them herself. In a new interview with the Guardian, she admits that it was her doing.

And as many suspected, the letter wasn’t meant to be taken seriously. ”Obviously I wrote it,” she said. “Don’t you guys understand sarcasm?”

Initially, reports circulated that Cobain penned the words about his wife. Their rocky marriage was no secret. But speculation immediately began to surface as to the real author of the letter, with a Cobain biographer claiming that it was indeed Love.

She went on to say in the Guardian interview that the police’s releasing of the note has put her life in danger, especially since conspiracy theorists — including Love’s own father — have claimed for years that she murdered her husband.
