Eight years ago, gritty alt-country rockers Drive-By Truckers did a run of gigs dubbed the Dirt Underneath tour.

“It was conceived as an acoustic tour, but over time it sort of morphed into more of a halfway acoustic tour,” the band recalls in a recent email to their fans. “We sat down and definitely re-arranged and reinvented songs, pulled out songs that usually don’t get played much in our regular show, had more banter and story-telling and a generally different vibe and approach from the DBT Rock Shows that we are known for.”

Now, the band is gearing up to do another run of dates with the exact same approach. “It will be a fun change of pace for us and hopefully a fun and different thing for y’all,” they go on. Aside from “pulling out some different songs” and mix up “old favorites in a different way,” the Drive-By Truckers also hope to work out new tunes throughout the shows.

The original Dirt Underneath tour led to Brighter Than Creation’s Dark, the bands seventh LP. And now, it appears that they hope the Dirt Underneath (Returns) tour will yield similarly positive results.

Only time will tell.
