Folk music is supposed to be the music of the people, not the music of critics or hipster tastemakers, and in that sense, the Lumineers are about as authentic as they come. Performing Saturday night (June 8) at Mountain Jam 2013, the Colorado crew literally broke down the barrier between the stage and the audience, venturing repeatedly into the mud and performing such tunes as 'Darlene' and 'Elouise' without the implied superiority that comes with being on a stage. Despite the aw-shuck vibe, the Lumineers are an exceptional group -- one of the few that can wear suspenders over T-shirts and cover both the Talking Heads' 'This Must Be the Place (Naive Melody)' and Creedence Clearwater Revival's 'Have You Ever Seen the Rain.' By Saturday night, Mountain Jam attendees had, indeed, seen the rain, as a whole lot of filthy garments attest, but with the Lumineers onstage, they knew they'd found the right place. Ho hey!
