Sure, Patti Smith's music is an acquired taste -- she's a spunky punk poet, not a golden-voiced chanteuse -- but it's one a lot of people have acquired. She's beloved by peers and critics alike, and she's even a member of the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame. And yet, after nearly 40 years and 11 albums, Smith has never won a Grammy. She's was nominated for Best Female Rock Performance in 1998 and 2001, but she lost to Fiona Apple and Sheryl Crow, respectively. If Smith finally does snag a prize, it won't be in that category. In 2005, Grammy bosses stripped out the gender qualifier to create Best Rock Vocal Performance, meaning she'll have to duke it out with the fellas. Patti probably wouldn't have it any other way.
