Some say the Smiths were to England what R.E.M. were to America. Indeed, both boasted jangling guitars and enigmatic, sexually ambiguous frontmen, and both helped to invent indie rock as we know it. Where the comparison doesn't quite hold, however, is in terms of Grammy success.

In fairness, the Smiths only lasted five years -- nothing compared to R.E.M.'s 31-year run, which brought 14 Grammy nominations and three wins. But the Smiths made some of the freshest, most influential music of the '80s, and their importance wasn't lost on those paying attention. Sadly, in 1986, the year they released their masterpiece 'The Queen Is Dead,' the Album of the Year Grammy went to Phil Collins' 'No Jacket Required.'
