Arctic Monkeys hit the main stage of Coachella 2012 Friday afternoon looking like they had nothing to lose. Frontman Alex Turner -- hair neatly coiffed, head-to-toe in black, wearing a leather jacket and a sneer -- wasted no time as he led the Sheffield, England-based quartet into 'Brainstorm,' all angular riffs, stuttering beats and clever rhymes. It's their biggest U.S. hit to date, and it set the tone right off the bat: the Monkeys were all business.

Playing the massive main stage, Arctic Monkeys turned in a propulsive, nearly 50-minute-long set that closed with current single 'R U Mine?,' which isn't a song from last year's 'Suck It and See' but a track due April 21 as part of Record Store Day. Next up on the main stage? Fellow Brits Pulp, who are in the midst of a reunion tour featuring their first shows in nine years. We know this is the festival scene and bands simply follow each other -- there are no "opening acts," per se -- but Pulp could certainly do worse for a lead-in than Arctic Monkeys.
