Wolverine goes back in time in order to prevent the apocalypse (nudge, nudge) in the latest trailer for 'X-Men: Days of Future Past.'

With Bryan Singer (who directed 'X-Men' and 'X2: X-Men United') back at the helm, we can't wait to see how he closes up the mess of 'X-Men: The Last Stand' while expanding on both the original trilogy and 2011's excellent 'X-Men: First Class.'

With the core teams of both 'First Class' and those original movies returning in order to tell a time-traveling tale, we have a feeling we're in for something quite amazing.

The new trailer starts somewhere in the future, when society has been ravaged by AI-controlled robots (called Sentinels) developed by Bolivar Trask (played by 'Game of Thrones'' Peter Dinklage) in the mid-'60s. In the 'Days of Future Past' comic book, the Sentinels eventually capture a vast majority of all living mutants. Once they succeed in killing off most of the X-Men and putting the rest of the mutants in detainment camps, the massive robots turn on the humans.

This all leads to the new movie's backdrop, where Wolverine, Professor X, Magneto and what's left of their respective teams join forces in order to survive the desolate environment ravaged by Sentinels. It's Wolverine's job to go back in time and broker peace between a hateful Magneto and a disabled Xavier in order to prevent a future that neither leader wants.

Be prepared for all sorts of familiar faces, as well as a bunch of new ones, in 'X-Men: Days of Future Past,' which comes out on May 23. Better still, it sets up 'X-Men: Apocalypse,' due in 2016.
