Watch Arcade Fire’s ‘We Exist’ Video, Starring a Cross-Dressing Andrew Garfield
Arcade Fire have just released a video for 'We Exist,' the latest single from their 2013 album 'Reflektor.' And, boy, is it a sight to see.
While the dance-inspired track revolves around a kid's struggle with gender identity and the difficult decision to come out to a parent, the video stars a cross-dressing Andrew Garfield, the star of 'The Amazing Spider-Man 2,' who's seen shaving his head in the opening few seconds.
The lengthy video shows Garfield dressing in drag and heading down the street to the local watering hole, where he generates some shifty looks from its patrons. But instead of showing an expected beatdown, the video treats us to a dance from Garfield that's part Kevin Bacon 'Footloose,' part Buffalo Bill 'The Silence of the Lambs,' plus some original fabulousness.
But wait, there's more. Not only is Garfield sashaying around in a blond wig and wearing denim cut-offs and a stomach-revealing button-down, he's joined by a chorus of other gentlemen clad in the same ensemble dancing to similar choreography.
The video concludes onstage during Arcade Fire's second weekend headline set at this year's Coachella festival, complete with a Garfield appearance.
Frontman Win Butler describes the song as being "about a gay kid talking to his dad" -- specifically, he's coming out to his straight father. In the song, Butler sings, "Daddy, it's true, I'm different from you / But tell me why they treat me like this?"
In recent live performances, Butler has introduced 'We Exist' by saying, "The right to marry anyone you want is a basic human rights issue." We couldn't agree more. And this great video, which you can watch above, drives home the point.
