More than 55 years since Motown's inception, Artistic Integrity Records has put together a tribute compilation to the iconic Detroit label, and Braid frontman Bob Nanna contributes one of its 17 covers.

Nanna delivers a stripped-back take on Smoke Robinson’s “You Really Got a Hold On Me,” a song he wrote and performed with the Miracles for Motown in 1962. Take a listen to his version over at Substream Magazine and then compare it to the original at the bottom of the page.

“‘You’ve Really Got a Hold On Me’ is one of my favorite Motown songs -- and definitely my favorite Smokey Robinson song -- so I figured I could give it my own stripped-down spin on it,” Nanna said. “Plus, I was able to throw a minor 7th flat 5 chord in there that I just learned in an ‘intro to jazz guitar’ class, so that feels good.”

Nanna’s take on “You’ve Really Got a Hold On Me” will appear on Not the Same Old Songs: A Tribute to Motown when it lands on New Year’s Day. You can pre-order a digital download right here. The track list (see below) also includes contributions from Kind of Like Spitting, Chris Farren and more.

Nanna dropped two albums in 2014: Braid’s No Coast and La Vella under his solo moniker the City on Film.
