Dylan Ryan / Sand is the psychedelic jazz-rock project of drummer and sonic adventurer Dylan Ryan. Their new song, 'Visionary Fantasy,' which premieres in the player below, is a journey through washes of guitar and tumbling bass, not so much resembling a rock song as a natural wonder, floating through falls, rapids and hair-trigger turns on its way to shred nirvana. Frenetic guitar and bass jam over a crashing drum that recalls groovy British proto-metal drummers like Bill Ward and Ian Paice.

Ryan also leads the long-running alt-jazz outfit Herculaneum; bassist Devin Hoff has worked with the likes of Cibo Matto, Nels Cline of Wilco and Julia Holter. The trio is planning a tour for this fall but haven't yet announced any dates.

Ryan mentioned a not so dusty influence on the track's sound: "The main chord progression was one of the first ideas we started playing around with at the start of writing, and there's a substantial nod to Helmet in there."

He also said the song evolved to fit the vague concept of its title. "To a large degree, I wrote the tune around this super dramatic title and it's become my favorite song to play live," Ryan explains.

'Visionary Fantasy' will appear on the Los Angeles act's upcoming second full-length, 'Circa,' set to drop on Sept. 30. Pre-order the album here and listen to Diffuser's exclusive premiere of 'Visionary Fantasy' below:
