Watch Eddie Vedder and Jack Irons Sing Pink Floyd’s ‘Shine On You Crazy Diamond’
Some musicians have bad blood with their former bands, and then there's Jack Irons, who has drummed for both the Red Hot Chili Peppers and Pearl Jam. Last night (March 17), while opening for the Chili Peppers, Pearl Jam frontman Eddie Vedder came out for a cover of Pink Floyd's "Shine On You Crazy Diamond."
The show took place at Seattle's Key Arena and you can see the performance above. It's the second known time that Vedder and Irons joined forces for the Wish You Were Here classic. Last August, Vedder sat in with Irons (and seemingly every other performer) at the inaugural Ohana Festival, which Vedder headlined, in Dana Point, Calif.
Rolling Stone notes that, during their set, the Chili Peppers covered "Until the Ocean" by Malfunkshun, the band that Andrew Wood was in prior to Mother Love Bone, which featured two future members of Pearl Jam, Jeff Ament and Stone Gossard.
Irons co-founded the Red Hot Chili Peppers in 1983, but left shortly thereafter to concentrate on his other band, What Is This? But he returned to the Chili Peppers in 1986 and stayed for two years, when he left after the death of guitarist Hillel Slovak.
According to the legend, Irons was responsible for hooking Vedder up with the other members of Pearl Jam when by slipping the singer a copy of the famed Mookie Blaylock demo. Following the 1994 dismissal of Dave Abbruzzese, Pearl Jam hired Irons, and he played on their album with Neil Young, Mirror Ball, and No Code before leaving in 1998.
