Johnny Marr, the guitar genius from the Smiths who has also played with the The, Electronic and Modest Mouse, has lent his chops to the soundtrack to 'The Sweeney.' The film is a modern adaptation of the British cop show of the same name.

The score was composed by Lorne Balfe, who brought in Marr after the duo worked together on additional music for 'Inception.' The Scottish-born Balfe has also had a hand in the scores for 'The Dark Knight Rises' and 'Kung Fu Panda 2.' Antony Genn (Pulp, Joe Strummer) and Martin Slattery (the Hours) also appear on the score. 'Regan's Beginning' is embedded below, with Marr's guitar entering at about the 1:10 mark.

'The Sweeney,' which opens in the U.K. on Sept. 12, stars Ray Winstone, Hayley Atwell, Damian Lewis and Ben Drew. It was directed by Nick Love. As the trailer shows, the film has everything you would expect from a British thriller, including car chases, scenes of male bonding in pubs and a no-necked old dude speaking in an accent that is indecipherable to American ears.
