Record Store Day 2014 – Everything You Need to Get Your Hands On
Yeah, we know -- every day should be Record Store Day. But it isn't. So you gotta take what you can get. And this year there's a lot to take. In fact, there's so much great and exclusive stuff made especially for Record Store Day tomorrow (April 19), that there's no way anyone can get all of it. You wouldn't be able to afford all of it anyway. So we made a list of some of our favorite items, including everything from old-school classic rockers to pioneering punks to new-school electronic kids. Happy hunting!
David Bowie
David Bowie's 7" '1984' picture disc comes from his 1974 album 'Diamond Dogs.' The B-side is a live version of the song recorded on 'The Dick Cavett Show,' never released on vinyl.
Built to Spill
Built to Spill's 'Ultimate Alternative Wavers' celebrates its 20th anniversary with its first-ever vinyl release. There's even a gatefold cover with limited-edition gold and green wax available.
Chvrches
The group's five-song breakthrough 'Recover EP' will be available in 12" clear orange vinyl. Better still, it's housed in a hand-numbered and stamped bootleg-looking sleeve.
Creedence Clearwater Revival
'The 1969 Singles' is a 10" white vinyl of all four singles and B-sides Creedence Clearwater Revival released in 1969, including 'Bad Moon Rising,' 'Lodi,' 'Green River' and 'Fortunate Son.'
The Cure / Dinosaur Jr.
This 7" 45 in the 'Side by Side Series' features the Cure's timeless 1987 song 'Just Like Heaven' backed on the flip side by Dinosaur Jr.'s sludgy cover of the song from a few years later.
Devo
'Live at Max's Kansas City -- November 15, 1977' captures a concert gig a year before Devo's debut album came out. This 12" vinyl features new liner notes and an appearance by David Bowie, who introduced the band onstage that night.
Drive-By Truckers
Five outtakes from the Drive-By Truckers' latest album, 'English Oceans,' are featured on this 10" vinyl, including the excellently named 'Trying to Be the Boss (On a Beaver Brown Budget).'
Green Day
Stuffed with 18 outtakes from the sessions that yielded Green Day's 'Uno!,' 'Dos!' and 'Tre!' albums, 'Demolicious' will be available on red or clear vinyl, CD and old-school cassette.
Husker Du
'Candy Apple Grey,' Husker Du's fifth album and major-label debut, gets a straight-up vinyl reissue for Record Store Day. Appropriately, it comes in gray vinyl for the occasion.
Joy Division
Joy Division's first-ever release, 'An Ideal for Living (1978),' gets a 12" vinyl reissue cut from recently remastered tapes. It includes four early songs, like 'Warsaw,' the band's first name.
Nirvana
Nirvana's 7" vinyl single for 'Pennyroyal Tea' was canceled after Kurt Cobain's death. We guess it might have had something to so with the B-side, 'I Hate Myself and Want to Die'
Gram Parsons
The late alt-country legend is honored with a two-LP set, '180 Gram: Alternate Takes From GP and Grievous Angel,' which gathers leftovers from his two solo albums. They're individually numbered too.
The Pogues and Joe Strummer
The legendary Irish punk band the Pogues replaced their drunken singer with the Clash's frontman for a spell. 'Live With Joe Strummer' collects previously unrelased material from a 1991 gig in London.
Ramones
The 10" 'Meltdown With the Ramones' was originally released as a promo-only record in the U.K. in 1980 and includes four songs by the band, including 'Have Something to Do' and 'I Wanna Be Your Boyfriend.'
Soundgarden
Getting a jump on the upcoming deluxe reissue, 'Superunknown: The Singles' includes 22 Soundgarden songs in all -- B-sides, live cuts ... and, of course, the classic singles, like 'Black Hole Sun.'
Bruce Springsteen
The 'American Beauty' 12" vinyl includes four previously unreleased songs -- like the title cut and 'Hurry Up Sundown' -- most of which were recorded during the sessions for Bruce Springsteen's latest album, 'High Hopes.'
