Listen to Weezer’s Cover of Toto’s ‘Africa’
Giving in to a fan's social media campaign, Weezer have recorded a version of Toto's 1982 smash "Africa."
You can check it out below.
Back in December, a Cleveland-area teenager named Mary created a Twitter account called @weezerafrica and tweeted at Weezer frontman Rivers Cuomo, "It's about time you bless the rains down in Africa." Last week, the band appeared to be trolling her by covering another huge hit from Toto IV, "Rosanna."
Shortly after starting her campaign, Mary spoke with Noisey and said that the idea came to her after discussing the song's use in Stranger Things with her friends. But she also admitted that it "was just a goofy joke. It was from Weezer was talking about they were inspired for their new album Daydream, what inspired them. So I jokingly said, 'Oh, I bet they were inspired by ‘Africa’ by Toto for their new album.' ... It was just an absurd joke. And then I was like, 'I wonder if I can get them to cover the song?'”
She ran the idea past Weezer drummer Patrick Wilson, who responded that he "laughed" at her suggestion.

Joke or not, roughly 340 tweets later, including a retweet of an endorsement of the project from Toto singer David Paich, Mary has gotten her wish. The band has unveiled its cover of "Africa" with a screenshot of her original tweet in the artwork.
So does Mary have another song in mind for her next Twitter campaign? "I don't know what's next," she said. "Just let me enjoy this for a while."
