The boy in the yearbook photo grew up with a different name than the one that would make him famous. He was born near Detroit, where he formed a band while he was in his teens. That band is often credited as one of the first punk groups.

Later on, he launched a solo career and has regularly released albums -- which often attract some big-name cameo appearances -- every few years. In the mid-'00s, he got back together with his old band for a new album and a series of concerts. He also liked to rub food all over his body onstage.
