Do you know who this gap-toothed, shaggy-haired kid is? That vacant stare he's sporting pretty much tells you that "rock star" was his No. 1 career choice.

The boy in the photo was born in Australia, but his family had settled into Los Angeles by the time he was in high school. It was there the budding trumpet player and bassist met another student, and soon they formed a band, which they're still leading today.

Over the past 30 years, the group has gone through several guitar players, had a No. 1 album and were recently inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame. And yes, he still rocks that gap in his teeth, but his hair is less shaggy these days.
