Zack de la Rocha Will Release a Solo Album in 2017
A day after surprising us with his debut single, "Digging for Windows,"we now learn that former Rage Against the Machine singer Zack de la Rocha will release a full-length album at an unknown date next year. Even though he's been working on a solo record since at least 2000, it will contain songs recorded this year.
We get the news from the producer of "Digging for Windows," El-P of Run the Jewels via three tweets he sent out yesterday (Sept. 8). "The ZDR the album is happening. 2017," he tweeted. "And yes this is new material made this year and yes there is more where that came from. Been keeping my mouth shut about my work w/ zack since jan when we did it. It hurt. Now i'll commence keeping my mouth shut about the rest."
De la Rocha unveiled "Digging for Windows" yesterday via BitTorrent, eight years after the last music he released, an EP with Jon Theodore of the Mars Volta that bore the name One Day as a Lion. He had reportedly recorded more than 20 songs over the years with numerous producers, including Trent Reznor and Questlove, but refused to put them out because they sounded to close to his former band.
Rage Against the Machine's final album was 2000's Renegades, a collection of hip-hop, punk and classic rock covers that peaked at No. 14 on the Billboard 200. Since then, the other three members of the group -- guitarist Tom Morello, bassist Tim Commerford and drummer Brad Wilk -- have worked together on a pair of high-profile projects. Between 2001 and 2007, they were in Audioslave with Soundgarden's Chris Cornell and put out three records. This year, the trio formed Prophets of Rage with Public Enemy's Chuck D and Cypress Hill's B-Real. Their debut EP, The Party's Over, was released last month.
