Dave Matthews Band didn’t tour as extensively in 2011 as they have in recent years — the Dave Matthews Band Caravan 2011 featured multi-date festivals in just four cities — but 2012 is already shaping up to be a busy one for Dave and the boys.

DMB have announced a 2012 summer tour that will encompass more than 40 cities, kicking off May 18 in the Woodlands, Texas, and running through a Sept. 9 gig in Mountain View, Calif. The trek will feature multi-night stops in a handful of cities, including Hartford, Conn., Saratoga Springs, N.Y., Wantagh, N.Y., and East Troy, Wisc. Check below for the complete itinerary.

Tickets are currently in pre-sale mode for all dates except a May 20 appearance at the Hangout Music Fest in Gulf Shores, Ala., with an on-sale date for all other concert tickets scheduled for March 9. A plethora of bands will take turns opening various dates, including Edward Sharpe and the Magnetic Zeros, the Avett Brothers, the Head and the Heart, Lettuce and others.

Meanwhile, DMB also have begun work on a follow-up to their last studio album, 2009′s ‘Big Whiskey and the GrooGrux King.’ “Dave Matthews Band is currently in the studio recording a new album with Steve Lillywhite, producer of the band’s first three studio albums, ‘Under The Table And Dreaming,’ ‘Crash’ and ‘Before These Crowded Streets,’” reads a post on group’s website.

While there is little more information to go on regarding the new disc, it’s good to hear Dave is re-teaming with Lillywhite, the producer behind such hits as ‘What Would You Say,’ ‘Ants Marching’ and ‘Crash.’ We’re not sure if it will hit shelves before the summer trek launches, but expect to at least hear some new tunes on the road this summer.
