Deadmau5 Trashes Pop Collaboration Requests

Do you think Deadmau5 remixing a Justin Bieber song is a great idea? Then you definitely won’t make it on the DJ’s Christmas list, since he absolutely hates the thought of meaningless pop/electro collaborations. Deadmau5 spoke out against such partnerships in a new rant online.

Posting on his official Tumblr page, the Canadian electronic music artist, who’s real name is Joel Thomas Zimmerman, said he rarely enjoys working with other acts — with the exceptions being Cypress Hill, Foo Fighters and a few others. Deadmau5 wrote: “Theres a perfectly valid reason why i dont usually enjoy the idea of a ‘collaboration’ … allthough you can rest assure whatever collaborations i have done in the past were the results of stuff im totally into, like Flipside, the Foo’s, Cyprus Hill [sic], etc.”

Apparently Deadmau5 receives quite a few pitches from his record label about working with the latest pop stars and he’s not having it:

All too often, there’s an influx of ‘big names’ that would get thrown around the label from time to time and of course, they fly off the table and out the f—in door faster than they hit my desk. eg. do you want to do a track with big name X, remix huge pop act y, etc etc. no. i f—ing don’t. i really REALLY don’t.

Deadmau5 continued his heated commentary and took aim at today’s pop songwriting trends:

“im passionate about music, engineering said music, and especially art… at least i certainly feel that i am. And the last thing i want to do… is take the meanings and feelings of a piece of music and have some f—ing dips— blab about lookin sexy, poppin bottles, ‘droppin bass’, or ANYTHING club related. which fortunately for the world *rolls eyes* makes up for 99% of the ‘electronic music’ fad that’s apparently considered mainstream now.”

Maybe Deadmau5 should thank his buddy Skrillex for giving electronica its mainstream tag.

In related news, Deadmau5 let worried fans know that he has improved his health over the last month. The DJ posted on his Facebook page that he has been seeing a trainer at the gym, eating right and just focusing on himself for once. Deadmau5 has previously said his body felt like it was shutting down and went to see doctors for tests.
