Gotye – Stage Name Origins

The current golden boy of the music industry goes by the name Gotye when he’s onstage, but he wasn’t born with the one-word nickname. In fact, his passport says Wouter “Wally” De Backer, and Wouter translates into French as Gaultier, a pet name given to him by his mom (who taught French classes) when he was a child. Eventually Wouter morphed Gaultier into Gotye in time for his 2003 debut album, ‘Boardface,’ and he’s been known by the name ever since.
