Green Day Stage Comeback at SXSW

After a pretty rocky past six months, Green Day staged a massive comeback at the Moody Theater in Austin yesterday as part of the South by Southwest music festival. The focus was on the three new albums the band released at the end of 2012, but there were plenty of older favorites played as well.

According to ‘Rolling Stone,’ recently rehabbed frontman Billie Joe Armstrong announced at the start of the show that “This is not a f—–g party, this is not a first date, it’s not a bar mitzvah – it’s a celebration!” They started their set with ’99 Revolutions’ from the ‘Tre!’ album.

Green Day released a trilogy of albums within months of each other late last year: ‘Uno!,’ ‘Dos!’ and ‘Tre!’ But after a highly publicized onstage meltdown and subsequent rehab break by Armstrong, the band’s tour in support of the albums was put on hold. As a result, none of the records sold very well. But the group played its first new show last week. Yesterday’s SXSW gig marked a major comeback move. You can see a brief clip from the performance below.

The band was at the fest to promote their new documentary ‘Cuatro!‘ But the bigger buzz surrounded their theater show. New songs like ‘Stay the Night,’ ‘Brutal Love’ and ‘Stop When the Red Lights Flash’ dominated the concert, but classics like ‘Burnout’ and ‘Basket Case’ were also included.
