Morrissey Offers Seasons Greetings in the Most Morrissey Way Possible

With the winter holiday season upon us, many musicians are extending their best wishes to their fans. Morrissey, however, chose to use the occasion to draw attention to the plight of animals who will be killed for holiday meals.

In a post called “Morry Christmas From Merrissey,” the fan site True to You posted the following message from him. “Christmas is a time for extreme violence and bad-will to millions of innocent and defenceless birds and animals who do not want to die, but who will be gleefully slaughtered by the human race – the most stupid and selfish and destructive species on the planet.” The words were accompanied by three photos of Morrissey underneath a wreath and smoking a cigar while wearing a jacket with “Bruce Lee” written across it.

Arguably music’s most outspoken vegan, Morrissey has made headlines for requiring all concert venues to not serve meat on the days he performs, and canceled a show in Iceland last year when the Harpa Concert Hall refused to comply. During this year’s Riot Fest in Chicago, out of respect for his beliefs, the festival neither served nor cooked meat during the two-hour window of his slot. Last year, he received an award from Farm Sanctuary, an organization that rescues abused farm animals, for his work on behalf of animal rights.

Back in August, he partnered with People for the Ethical Treatment of Animals (PETA) to create a video game called “This Beautiful Creature Must Die” that used the Smiths’ song “Meat Is Murder.” Morrissey called the game “the biggest social crusade of all, as we safeguard the weak and helpless from violent human aggression. You don’t get that from ‘Pokemon Go.’”
