Ugly Band Breakups: Smashing Pumpkins
Billy Corgan’s May 2000 announcement that the end of the Smashing Pumpkins was nigh seemed a long time coming. In fact, after more than a decade of drama highlighted by drug addiction, personality conflicts and frontman Corgan’s ego, bassist D’arcy Wretzky and guitarist James Iha seemed downright relieved that they were free to go. Corgan later revamped the band with founding drummer Jimmy Chamberlin, but he too was gone again by 2009 as Corgan continues on as the sole original member.
