Hear Chromatics’ Moody Cover of Cyndi Lauper’s ‘Girls Just Wanna Have Fun’

When Chromatics announced their upcoming album, Dear Tommy, last year, they said fans could expect it around Valentine’s Day 2015. Well, Valentine’s Day has come and gone and Dear Tommy has yet to receive an official release date. However, Chromatics haven’t been completely silent. They recently covered Cyndi Lauper’s “Girls Just Wanna Have Fun” for a Mango commercial, and that song will be released as a maxi-single this Friday (Nov. 6).

The single features seven versions of Chromatics’ cover, including “Girls Just Wanna Have Some” and “Girls Just Wanna Have Dub.” Both have received music videos directed by Chromatics’ Johnny Jewel and starring frontwoman Ruth Radelet wandering the Santa Monica Pier. Since releasing their most recent full-length, Kill for Love, in 2012, Chromatics have issued a string of singles from the forthcoming Dear Tommy, including “In Films,” “I Can Never Be Myself When You’re Around” and “Just Like You” (see the elusive album’s comple track list below). Likewise, Jewel composed the soundtrack for the Ryan Gosling-directed film, Lost River, which featured Chromatics’ “Yes” as its theme song. The band also dropped “Shadow” for Adult Swim’s singles program in September.
