Eagles of Death Metal Frontman Criticizes Students’ Gun Protests
Given that he's seen and suffered the effects of mass gun violence on a more personal level than many people, it might be easy to assume that Eagles of Death Metal frontman Jesse Hughes might default to a position of empathy for his fellow survivors — and that even if he didn't necessarily agree with the policy goals being advocated by the politically active youth at the vanguard of the March for Our Lives and Never Again movement, he'd support their hope for a safer tomorrow.
But as Hughes proved in a flurry of Instagram posts that went up over the weekend, he has nothing but contempt for the students leading the call for change.
Three of the four posts Hughes put up on his account have since been deleted, but summaries and screen caps are available courtesy of Consequence of Sound — and he decided not to delete his first post, which consists of a cartoon equating gun control with chopping off one's own genitals to protest rape. In a lengthy caption appended to the post, Hughes explained in detail why he's chosen to take this movement and its goals as a personal insult, focusing particular anger on the survivors of the Parkland school shooting who helped found it.
"When the truth don’t line up with your bullshit narrative just hold your breath and stamp your feet and refused [sic] to except [sic]it," wrote Hughes. "Then take multiple days off of school playing hooky at the expense of 16 of your classmates blood….!…. it might be funny if it wasn’t so pathetic and disgusting..."
Later adding "long live rock 'n' roll," Hughes doubled down on his criticism of the youth at the center of the movement. "As the survivor of a mass shooting I can tell you from first-hand experience that all of you protesting and taking days off from school insult the memory of those who were killed and abuse and insult me and every other lover of liberty by your every action," he continued. "May everyone [sic] of these disgusting vile abusers of the dead live as long as possible so they can have the maximum amount of time to endure their shame….and be Cursed."
