With dense guitar work and reverberating synth, Brooklyn’s Toy Cities craft clean, smart and super melodious New Wave tunes.

Toy Cities comprise Michael Nesci, Josh Harris, Alex Beninato and Mitchell Lee, who came together in December 2012. With the help of producer Chris Moore (Yeah Yeah Yeahs, TV on the Radio), the band is set to self-release three tracks this summer.

We’re offering a preview with today’s free MP3, ‘Setting Son.’ Nesci told Diffuser.fm that the message of the song actually contrasts its layered and dense sound.

“We recorded this song in a small Brooklyn studio (Dr. Wu’s) over a day and a half,” Nesci said. “The song is about dealing with, and ultimately overcoming, isolation.”

“[We] wanted to create a sound that was enveloping but also detached to get that mood across,” he added. “Ended up going directly into an Eventide Harmonizer for guitar (no amp), made for steely distant tones.”
