Vance Joy’s breakthrough hit, “Riptide” -- which appeared on the Australian singer-songwriter's debut full-length, last year’s Dream Your Life Away -- has been named the winner of the 2014 International Songwriting Competition. ISC founder Candace Avery said Joy’s song “exemplifies extraordinary talent” (via Billboard).

“It is such an honor to win this songwriting prize,” the singer said of the honor. “Writing songs is what gives me a feeling of purpose. I’m proud to receive this award voted on by my songwriting peers.”

Those peers include Bastille, Keane, Sarah McLachlan and others who sat on the ISC’s panel of judges. “Riptide” received a perfect score form each of the judges, which marks a first since the award’s 2002 inception.

As the winner of ISC's top prize, Joy will take home $25,000 in cash, plus equipment, services and more.

Joy has taken his single to a handful of late-night stages, including Conan and Jimmy Kimmel Live! last year. More recently, the Melbourne-based singer unveiled a music video for Dream Your Life Away track, “Georgia,” which you can watch here.
