In a little more than a month’s time, Andrew Bird will return with his latest album Are You Serious, and ahead of that day, he has shared a second single, “Left Handed Kisses,” featuring Fiona Apple.

According to Bird, “Left Handed Kisses” was born out of his inability to write “simple love songs,” because people are just too “complex.” As a result, he went out looking for a worthy sparring partner and recruited Apple for the duet. The two artists make for an admirable team as they alternate between the saccharine and self-referential wit. Besides, no one delivers complex love songs quite like Apple (and we’ll take any new Fiona Apple music we can get our hands on during the droughts that tend to span between her albums).

“The song began as an internal dialogue,” Bird said in a press release. “Then another voice came creeping in and I thought, ‘This should be a duet if I can find the right person.’ I needed to find someone really indicting. [Apple] was totally committed. The session was a long whiskey-fueled night -- unhinged, for sure. All worth it, of course.”

Are You Serious is due out April 1 via Loma Vista. Bird previously unveiled the bluesy lead single “Capsized.” You can find an updated list of the singer-songwriter’s upcoming tour dates below:
